This DVD is one from L&L Publishing's series World's Greatest Magic by the World's Greatest Magicians and it features routines from 5 magicians, namely: Steve Draun, Bruce Cervon, Dan Tong, Dan Fleshman and Michael Close. With the exception of the Mike Close offering, all the others use a reel to get the ring into the key case and so if you have one of those Ring Flight cases you are set ready to perform the various routines. So let's deal briefly with each of the contributions to this DVD.
Steve Draun's effect is the most basic in terms of handling and routining as he simply just vanishes the ring and has it appear inside the case. What makes his contribution interesting, however, is that he explains how you can make your own Ring Flight key case. He gives some nice tips on its construction and so if you prefer to build your own rather than take a chance on a mass produced model, this might be of help to you.
Bruce Cervon's routine uses a zippered key case which he opens and displays at the start of the trick. In his presentation, one of the keys from the case apparently disappears and reappears in his pocket leaving the borrowed ring in the case alongside the remaining keys. You will need to do a small extra bit of preparation to your regular key case to perform this variation, but it makes for a nice routine and he gives some very good handling tips.
Dan Tong is filmed in what looks like a genuine performing location and with regular lay people, a family including some children. Dan offers a combination of a ring on stick routine with the Flying Ring. At the start the borrowed ring penetrates onto a chopstick which is held by a spectator. He then goes to repeat the effect but instead the ring disappears and is found in the keycase. This is a practical, commercial presentation.
Dan Fleshman uses Ring Flight as the finish to an excellent Ring And String sequence. He borrows a lady's ring and it appears to change into his own ring. With this ring he then does 4 ring on string moves before finally 'discovering' the original vanished borrowed ring in the key case. Dan teaches the ring on string moves so you are getting an extra bonus on this DVD with his sequence.
Michael Close's routine is the Ring Fright mentioned in the Just In Case review. If you have that product, it is good to actually see Mike present it. If you don't have the necessary props, however, this contribution will be of no use to you since you can't achieve exactly what Mike does on the DVD without the special props. However, you could adapt his presentation using alternative moves and props if you use a little imagination.
So, overall this DVD is great as a resource for anyone looking to perform Ring Flight. It will show you how to make a little more of the basic trick by using it as part of longer routines. It will also prove to you, if proof be needed, that the trick really does get great reactions from lay people. ML (From the Flying Ring article)
