The Polo Deck

English readers will probably have no problems in guessing
what is special about a Polo Deck - yes, it is a deck of cards which has a hole
drilled down through its centre just like the Polo mint sweet. The hole measures
25mm in diameter and the pack supplied is a Bee poker deck with its borderless
red diamond back design.
Supplied with the deck are some instructions which give a
range of effects and suggestions for use. Some use the hole in an overt way
(e.g. cards are sprung into the air and you catch the selected card via the hole
on your index finger), others use it in a covert way to control and/or reveal a
selected card or cards.
The main problem you may have with this is trying to
justify by means of presentation why you are using a deck with a hole through
its centre! If you are doing one of the suggested effects in which a ribbon is
threaded through that central hole and a selected card is made to rise out of
the deck penetrating through the ribbon in doing so, there's no difficulty
because you need the hole in order to hang the deck on the ribbon. But if you
use the Polo Deck simply to find a selected card, an astute spectator may start
to consider the reason for the hole and in doing so stumble upon the simple
principle that is being used.
The Polo Deck does have some potential and if used
selectively with the right choice of trick, could well prove to be interesting
to a lay audience. The card stock doesn't handle quite so well with holes
drilled through all the cards but it's OK for most uses. The instructions are
basic and just about adequate, and the price is very fair. ML
