Richard Sanders of Extreme Burn fame presents another
clever idea although this one is not his own. It’s an idea by Australian
Cameron Owen with handling ideas from Sanders. It’s a card revelation but at
the same time it is also a visual penetration of two solid objects with very
convincing proof that none of the items are faked.
You could even leave everything as a souvenir with the spectator at the
end.
What you would see is a card chosen and shuffled back into
the pack. The magician points out a dog tag style chain around his neck. The
pack is waved in front of the chain and as the deck passes in front of the
lowest point of the chain, the chosen card suddenly appears linked on to the
chain. The chain links can be clearly seen passing through the card. Finally the
chain is removed from around the magician’s neck and handed out for close
examination or even given away. The card is genuinely found attached to the
chain and neither the card nor chain is gimmicked. The
penetration is quite startling and allowing the examination of the card on the
chain in the spectator’s hands is absolutely baffling for them.
Everything is taught and supplied with the DVD.
A 36 inch dog tag chain and a certain something are supplied for you to
make up the trick with your own deck of cards. It
will take only a few minutes to make the necessary gimmick and the performance
will require some straightforward handling practice for the experienced
magician. The actual moment when the
card penetrates on to the chain looks visually magical and is easy to do. The
major handling is done before and after this. Everything is well taught with a
few different handling options to consider.
It’s worth pointing out that Richard Sanders works in a
tee shirt which makes the chain hang freely around the magician’s uncluttered
neck. If you more regularly wear a collar, tie and jacket, the various collars
and tie can get in the way of the chain hanging freely around the neck. This
doesn’t mean you can’t do it formally dressed but a jacket and tie can
prevent the chain hanging freely and can make the removal of the chain tricky.
Richard Sanders doesn’t address the issue of the
practicality of repeat performances in a walk around situation.
Under real world performing conditions it’s not suited to repeat
performing for two reasons. Firstly it has to be reset, which although is done
quickly, needs to be out of sight and secondly, anyone following you to see the
trick again will see the same card being used.
Some experimenting with the reset could lead to a simple manoeuvre which
might go unnoticed in the middle of a function room. It’s surprising what can
go unnoticed, but essentially it’s not a repeatable trick which is a shame. PP
What's Hot: A
startling and visual penetration which reveals a chosen card
What's Not: Despite the
practical method it’s not repeatable for walk around conditions
