Surefire is Mark Southworth’s first DVD release and contains eleven tried and tested routines. Here’s what’s included.
The first, and probably my favourite, routine is ‘Blockbuster’. I first saw Mark perform this on RSVP’s stand at the Blackpool Magicians’ Convention earlier this year, and, although I wasn’t completely fooled, I thought it was an excellent presentational idea for an old principle.
Here’s what the spectators see. A randomly named movie star is thought of. You bring out a blank deck of cards and explain that you have been collecting autographs, but are not doing very well. As you spread through all the blank cards, one card has a signature on it. It matches the thought of movie star. Nice!
The ‘Blockbuster’ principle can literally be used for an endless number of presentations. ‘State of the Union’ and ‘Holiday Destination’, also on the DVD, are just two variations possible. ‘3D Realization’ is another excellent routine with an 8 ball production and great kicker finish that’s well worth learning. You’ll need a few props for this but it’s worth it.
Other routines also worth studying are ‘Coins Across’, ‘Business Card Bonus’, ‘The Hidden Key’, ‘Super-fast Chop Cup’, ‘Ambitious Sliker’, ‘Slicka Monte’ and ‘Float’.
What’s interesting about this DVD is that Russ Stevens, who is usually behind the camera directing, is actually on camera this time running through the explanations with Mark, but he still manages to direct the shoot with great effect. It’s also refreshing to watch a DVD that’s not just totally dedicated to one particular genre of magic.
The material on this disc is aimed at the intermediate to advanced performer. You’ll need various sleights under your belt to get the best from this, such as how to control a card, perform a pass, execute a pressure fan, do a top change and pull off a decent double or triple lift.
If these are well within your capability then there is much to learn from this excellent DVD release. I’m sure this is the first of many quality releases from Mark. Well done!
What’s Hot: Excellent mix of good commercial effects.
What’s Not: Not for the beginner. Prior knowledge required.
