Here’s a nice baffling effect that started life about twenty years ago when Martin Breese purchased the rights to it. It’s one of those effects that even when you know how it’s done, it’s still baffling. The trouble with the original version was that it didn’t work every time and no matter what was tried it still wasn’t 100% so it was put to one side but not forgotten. Now some twenty years or so later, with a simple modification, Terri Rogers’ ‘Blockbuster’ is now available.
The effect is simple and over in a flash. A solid block of polished wood is shown – in the middle is a slot and running all the way through it is a hole which has a piece of black ribbon threaded through it. The ribbon can be seen through the holes and through the slot. A brass ring is introduced and inserted into the slot. A spectator is then invited to push the ring sharply into the slot. On doing this the block is released and the ring is seen to have miraculously penetrated the ribbon.
‘Blockbuster’ comes complete with an excellently written and nicely illustrated booklet (I have to say that as I produced it for Martin), and it will keep you equally as entertained trying to work out how it actually works as it will to perform it. Martin and I had some headaches and a few late nights trying to get the illustrations just right for this one.
If it has a downside it is that the block is not examinable, either before or after the effect. But like all good effects if it is performed correctly there should be no reason for the spectators to want to grab for the block.
Another great effect from Martin Breese International that I’m sure will one day be a collector’s item. Get one while you can. PS
