Attack of the Copper Silver Coin DVD

Dave Forrest and Cameron Francis
Available from; www.full52.com
Price: £14.99

Yet another DVD hits the market with a single genre theme with ten routines utilising the Copper/Silver gaffed coin (not supplied). If you have one lying at the back of the drawer, these tricks might stir your interest in what you can accomplish with this venerable faked coin. On the other hand they might not because this product is a triumph of style over content. Themed and titled in 1950s Hollywood B movie style with cover graphics and a lengthy animated introduction to match, Forrest and Francis obviously thought they needed something to cheer up the otherwise tedious material and lack of production quality. The animated film and shockingly loud music between each trick seem to dominate the whole DVD .

Basically, here are two guys having some fun, performing some coin tricks to each other that they have just made up. Neither comes across as a comfortable performer or at least not in front of the camera.  Nor do we see the material performed in front of a real audience to show the sort of reactions these routines might produce.  It’s possibly because these routines are really designed for other young magicians to watch so I’m not convinced these presentations would engage with an audience in the real world. I also doubt if this material has been near a real audience! Unfortunately both performers lack any spark in terms of presentation so this material feels more like the Night of the Living Dead!

Only two routines I felt had a future. Simple Alchemy looked visually good where three copper coins placed in the hand turned into silver coins and one by one changed back again.  Another one, Up for the Cup, is a coins to cup routine coupled with a change of silver to copper. All the tricks are basically about coins changing places and from copper to silver, so if that appeals, then this will be right up your street. If you think you might be purchasing something with a more professional approach that works in the real world you will be disappointed. PP

What’s Hot: Plenty of tricks with a Copper/Silver coin
What’s Not: Performances lack any production quality or professionalism
Star rating: *
